Reading FC assistant boss Alex Rae criticised the referee after the 2-0 defeat to West Brom.

Royals lost for the sixth time this season and second time at home this season as Matt Phillips and Taylor Gardner-Hickman were on target for the managerless Baggies.

The result still leaves Reading in the top six, although they will have been desperately disappointed not to have claimed anything against an Albion side which started the day in the relegation zone.

We are bitterly disappointed to lose the game, said Rae who was on media duties because of manager Paul Ince being ill. I thought we did enough to get something out of it. We made a slow start and have to defend the first goal a lot better.

We asked the boys at half time to be more aggressive and need to get after them more. We created some good moments and with a bit more composure, we may well have capitalised.

But you have to give their keeper credit, he pulled off a few decent saves and when you look at the second goal, the only guy in the whole stadium who doesnt think its a foul is the referee.

Even if he (Gardner-Hickman on Hendrick) does touch the ball, which he doesnt, he goes through the back of the player and ends up on top of the player. He has steamrolled through him and that knocked the stuffing out of us because we were in the ascendancy at that point. Its a sore one to take.

A lot was made of the referees performance throughout the game, with many Reading fans questioning Tim Robinsons decisions, including the challenge involving Hendrick in the lead-up to the second goal.

I dont need social media to tell me when the referee has missed a decision, Rae added. Everybody knows it was a free-kick. We will just have to dust ourselves down. We have another tough game at Swansea on Tuesday.

Thats the Championship for you. If you dont defend properly in key moments, you can get punished and you have to be clinical when the opportunities arise.
